NSW Farmers Urge for Improved Connectivity as 3G Networks Shut Down
As Australia prepares to transition from 3G to 4G and 5G networks, NSW Farmers is calling for enhanced connectivity in rural areas. The switch-off of 3G networks by Telstra and Optus on October 28 has raised concerns about mobile coverage for remote communities.
Deb Charlton, Chair of the NSW Farmers Rural Affairs Committee, emphasized the importance of maintaining—and ideally improving—mobile connectivity during this transition. “Reliable connectivity is essential for our communities’ safety and business operations. It’s crucial that we upgrade, not downgrade, our mobile coverage in 2024,” she stated.
Charlton insisted that at a minimum, 4G coverage should match or exceed that of the existing 3G network, highlighting the need for no one to be left behind in this shift. “Those in rural areas deserve the same level of connectivity as those in urban centers.”
As the network shutdown approaches, Charlton urged rural customers to take immediate action to ensure they remain connected. “This shutdown impacts more than just mobile phones; it affects the farm machinery vital for our food and fiber production,” she explained.
Farmers are encouraged to verify with device or machinery manufacturers that their technology will function after the 3G shutdown, to avoid potential disruptions. Additionally, she called on telecom providers to continue offering technical support to ensure all customers can stay connected safely.
